Glover Island facts for kids
Glover Island is a very large island located inside Grand Lake in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It's called a lake island because it's completely surrounded by the waters of a lake. Glover Island is about 178 square kilometers (68.7 square miles) in size. This makes it the 18th largest lake island in the entire world!
The waters of Grand Lake were made higher for a project called the Deer Lake Power Development. But don't worry, Glover Island was already there long before the lake's water level was raised.
Where is Glover Island?
Glover Island is found in the Appalachian Mountains region of Newfoundland. It stretches out in a northeast to southwest direction. The island is quite long and narrow. It measures about 24.2 miles (39 kilometers) at its longest point. Its average width is around 3.2 miles (5.1 kilometers).
What's Inside Glover Island?
Glover Island itself has many smaller ponds and lakes. One of the most interesting features is a lake near the center of the island. This lake is about 1.3 miles (2.1 kilometers) long and 0.5 miles (0.8 kilometers) wide. Its area is 1.41 square kilometers (0.54 square miles).
This makes it one of the largest "lakes-on-an-island-in-a-lake-on-an-island." It's a bit like a giant set of Russian nesting dolls, but with islands and lakes! This special lake even has seven smaller islands inside it. The biggest of these tiny islands is about 112 meters (367 feet) by 112 meters.
