One idea is that the name came from an older French settlement in the area. This settlement might have been called Narbonne. This name was probably inspired by the city of Narbonne in southern France. When English settlers heard the name Narbonne, it sounded like "Gnaw Bone" to them. So, the name changed over time.
People were using the name "Gnaw Bone" as early as 1879. This is shown in old newspaper articles from places like the Columbus (Indiana) Republic and the Cincinnati (Ohio) Enquirer. The name has been used ever since. Gnaw Bone is often mentioned on lists of places with very unusual names!
