Goat Island (South Carolina) facts for kids
Goat Island is a small island located in South Carolina, United States. It sits right between the towns of Mt. Pleasant and Isle of Palms. This island is found along the Intracoastal Waterway, which is like a long, calm water highway for boats.
Goat Island is one of the tiniest islands where people live in this area. It's only about the size of a regular neighborhood street!
Why Is It Called Goat Island?
Goat Island gets its name from a fun tradition. Every spring, a local person named Bubba Love and his friends bring a small group of goats to live on the island.
Many tourists enjoy watching these goats from the Marshwalk, which is a boardwalk that looks out over the marshy areas. It's a unique sight! Besides goats, peacocks have also been added to the island's animal population, making it even more interesting.
Little Goat Island
There's also another island nearby called Little Goat Island. It's also located between Isle of Palms and Mt. Pleasant.
Recently, Little Goat Island was put up for sale. It is quite large, about 390 acres in total. However, only about 25 acres of the island are high enough above the water to be built on.
