Godfrey Itama Oboabona (born August 16, 1990) is a former professional footballer from Nigeria. He played as a centre-back, which is a key defensive position in football. Godfrey is well-known for his strong play for various clubs and for representing his home country.
His Club Journey
Godfrey Oboabona started his football career in his hometown of Ondo City, Nigeria. He began playing professionally with a local team called Sunshine Stars.
In August 2013, there was talk that he might move to the famous English club Arsenal. However, both Godfrey and the chairman of Sunshine Stars said this was not true.
Later that same month, he signed a four-year contract with a Turkish club named Çaykur Rizespor. Godfrey was very excited about this move, calling it a "dream." He played many games for them.
After his time in Turkey, in September 2018, Godfrey joined HNK Gorica in the Croatian First Football League. Then, in February 2020, he moved to the Georgian club FC Dinamo Batumi.
Playing for Nigeria
Godfrey Oboabona first played for the Nigerian national team in 2012. He took part in important matches to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.
He was chosen to be part of Nigeria's team for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. This is a big tournament for African countries. Nigeria won this competition in 2013, making Godfrey an Africa Cup of Nations champion!
He also played for Nigeria in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2014 FIFA World Cup. These are huge international tournaments where countries from all over the world compete. Godfrey was also considered for Nigeria's team for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
