The Goffstown Public Library is a special building in Goffstown, New Hampshire. It's located at 2 High Street. This library building was designed by architects Henry M. Francis & Sons. It was built a long time ago, in 1909.
The building has a style called Classical Revival. This means it looks like old Greek or Roman buildings. It's made of brick with stone decorations. In 1995, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes important historical places in the United States. The Goffstown Public Library is one of the best examples of this building style in the town. It has a main front with three sections. The middle part, where the door is, sticks out a little. Above the door, there's a triangular roof part called a pediment. This pediment is held up by tall, fancy columns.
About the Library Building
The Goffstown Public Library is in a very important spot in the middle of Goffstown village. You can find it at the corner of Elm and High Streets. It's a one-story building made of brick. It has a sloped roof covered with slate tiles. The building sits on a strong granite foundation.
The library has a basement that is partly above the ground. A stone line separates the basement from the main floor. The front of the building used to be perfectly balanced. Later, a matching section was added to the north side. A decorative band goes around the building just below the roof. This band has small, block-like decorations.
The Main Entrance
The main entrance of the library is in a part that sticks out. This section has a triangular roof, like a small temple front. The actual doorway is set back a bit. On either side of the door, there are round columns. These columns are placed between flat columns, called pilasters, that are part of the wall. A decorative ledge, or cornice, frames the entrance.
History of the Library
Goffstown's library first started in 1888. A woman named Miss Lucy Rogers gave 150 books to begin the collection. At first, the library was in the town hall. That town hall building isn't there anymore.
Work on the current library building began in 1907. The architect who designed it was Henry M. Francis. He was from Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Henry M. Francis also designed other small libraries. He created libraries for the towns of Rindge and Jaffrey. The Goffstown Public Library was officially opened in October 1909. It has been the main library for the town ever since.
