Golden Hill, San Diego facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Golden Hill is a neighborhood in San Diego, California. It is located just south of the famous Balboa Park. To its north is Balboa Park, and to its south are neighborhoods like Sherman Heights and Grant Hill. Golden Hill is also east of downtown San Diego.

This area is known for its history and interesting buildings. Many homes and apartments here were built before the year 1900.

Golden Hill's History and Transport

In the 1910s, Golden Hill became connected to other parts of San Diego by streetcars. These streetcars were part of a big public transport system. This system grew because of the Panama–California Exposition in 1915. A man named John D. Spreckels helped build it. The streetcars were a common sight in Golden Hill until 1939. One streetcar line, the number 2, ran until the mid-1950s.

Golden Hill was also once home to the Women's History Museum and Educational Center. This museum is now in Point Loma. It is one of the few museums in the country focused on women's history.

Some parts of Golden Hill were once called Brooklyn Heights. This area included streets like Fern, 28th, 30th, and Grape. The school at 30th and Beech Streets was even called Brooklyn School. A church at 30th and Fir was known as Brooklyn Heights Presbyterian Church. These names changed in 1981 when two churches joined together.

Getting Around Golden Hill

Golden Hill is a great place for walking. You can easily walk to downtown San Diego, San Diego City College, and many parts of Balboa Park.

If you travel by car, you can get to Golden Hill directly from Interstate 5 and State Route 94. Major streets for driving and bus routes include Broadway (running east and west) and 25th Street and 30th Street (running north and south). The neighborhood is in the 92102 zip code. Many people in Golden Hill enjoy walking, just like in other neighborhoods near Balboa Park.

The neighborhood of South Park is sometimes thought of as part of Golden Hill. The city planning department even calls both areas the "Greater Golden Hill Community."
