Goldsmith was first surveyed in 1876. It was originally called Green Station. The first landowners included John Wolford, J.A. Teter, McDonald Teter, and Hiram Fulkerson.

The town's name changed to Goldsmith because there was already another place in Indiana called Green Station. It was named after a contractor who helped build the LaFayette, Muncie and Bloomington Railroad. The very first home in the village was built by Solomon Wolford on the west side. Goldsmith also had a blacksmith and a shop early on.

A Methodist Episcopal Church was started in Goldsmith in 1881. A church building was constructed for the community, costing $1,000 at the time. A post office opened in Goldsmith in 1876 and served the community until 2001.

By 1914, Goldsmith was known for its high school. It was considered one of the most modern schools in the state back then. The town also used to host a special event called the "old settlers' meeting." Thousands of early Indiana settlers would gather in Goldsmith to celebrate their history.
