History of Goltry
The land where Goltry is today was once part of the Cherokee Outlet. This was a large area of land that belonged to the Cherokee Nation. It was not open for people who were not Native American to settle until September 1893.
After this land opened, a small settlement called Karoma started. It was about one and a half miles southeast of where Goltry is now.
In 1904, a railway line was built through the area. This railway was part of the Frisco system. Because of the new railway, many people from Karoma decided to move their homes and businesses closer to the train tracks.
That same year, a company surveyed and planned out the new town on 240 acres of land. The new community was officially named Goltry. It was named after Charles Goltry, who lived in Enid. He owned the land, and his company built a grain elevator there. A grain elevator is a tall building used to store grain.
Many of the first people to settle in Goltry were Germans from Russia. Others came from places like Bohemia (now part of Germany) and Switzerland. At one time, Goltry had two German Mennonite churches. One of these churches, the Pleasant View Church of God in Christ Mennonite, was started in 1905. Even in the year 2000, about one-third of the town's residents had German family roots.
Goltry is also famous for being the birthplace of Wally Parks (1913-2007). He was the person who started the National Hot Rod Association. This organization is very important for car racing fans!
