Gonçalo Pereira Ribeiro Telles (born May 24, 1922 – died November 11, 2020) was an important Portuguese politician. He was also a landscape architect. This means he designed parks and green spaces. He was born and died in Lisbon.
Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles was one of the first politicians in Portugal to talk about protecting the environment. He helped create laws to save nature. He also founded political parties focused on ecological ideas.

His Work as a Landscape Architect
Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles studied Agronomy Engineering. He also learned about Landscape Architecture. He studied at the Higher Institute of Agronomy in Lisbon.
He started working for the Lisbon City Council in 1951. There, he helped design parks and gardens. He also taught at the university. He worked with Francisco Caldeira Cabral, who was a pioneer in landscape architecture in Portugal. They even wrote a book together called A Árvore in Portugal. This book is about different tree species in the country.
Famous Green Space Projects
One of his most famous projects is the garden of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He designed this garden with António Viana Barreto. This work won a special award called the Valmor Prize in 1975.
He also planned many green areas in Lisbon. These included the Alcântara Valley and the Chelas Valley. He also worked on the Monsanto Green Corridor. These projects aimed to connect green spaces across the city.
Other projects he worked on include:
- The public space in the Estacas District in Alvalade.
- The gardens of the Chapel of St. Jerome in Restelo.
- The green cover for the hill of The Castle of St. George.
- The Amália Rodrigues Garden, near Eduardo VII Park, designed in 1996.
He also taught at the University of Évora. There, he started new courses in Landscape Architecture. In 2013, he received the Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Prize. This is the most important international award for landscape architecture.
His Political Life and Environmental Efforts
Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles started his public work in youth groups. He was part of the National Culture Center. Here, he spoke out against the government at the time.
He helped create the Movement of Independent Monarchists in 1957. He also supported Humberto Delgado for president in 1958. In 1967, during floods in Lisbon, he spoke against city planning policies.
After the Revolution of April 25, 1974, he helped found the Monarchical People's Party. He was a leader in this party. He worked as an UnderSecretary of State for the Environment. Later, he became Secretary of State for the Environment.
Protecting Nature in Portugal
In 1979, he joined a group called the Democratic Alliance. He was elected to the Assembly of the Republic. From 1981 to 1983, he was the Minister of State and Quality of Life. This was a very important role.
As Minister, he helped create new laws to protect land. These laws included:
- The National Agricultural Reserve: This protects important farming land.
- The National Ecological Reserve: This protects areas important for nature.
- The Municipal Master Plan: This helps cities plan how they use land.
As a member of the Assembly, he helped with many environmental laws. These included laws about the environment, regional planning, and eucalyptus tree planting. He also worked on laws about hunting and environmental impact.
In 1993, he founded the Earth Party Movement. He led this party until 2007. In 2016, a documentary film was made about him. It was called A Vossa Terra - landscapes of Gonçalo Ribeiro Teles.
Awards and Recognition
Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles received several important awards for his work:
- On October 31, 1969, he received the Officer of the Military Order of Santiago da Espada. This award is for scientific, literary, and artistic merit.
- On April 6, 1988, he received the Grand Cross of the Military Order of Christ.
- On June 10, 1990, he received the Grand Cross of the Order of Freedom.
- On May 25, 2017, he received the Grand Cross of the Order of Infante D. Henrique.
