Gonzalo Portocarrero (born December 3, 1949 – died March 21, 2019) was a famous Peruvian sociologist. A sociologist is someone who studies how people live together in groups and societies. He was also a social scientist and an essayist, which means he wrote many thoughtful articles and books.

Early Life and Education

Gonzalo Portocarrero was born in Lima, Peru, on December 3, 1949. He was the third of four children in his family. He went to a private school called La Recoleta.

He studied Sociology at the National University of San Marcos. He also studied Letters at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. Later, he earned a Master's degree in Sociology from the Latin American Social Sciences Institute (FLACSO). He also got his doctorate (a very high degree) in Sociology from the University of Essex in England.

His Work as a Professor

Gonzalo Portocarrero was a visiting professor at many universities. He taught in countries like the United States, Japan, Germany, Mexico, Venezuela, and the United Kingdom. Until he passed away, he was a professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. He worked in their Department of Social Sciences.

Important Contributions and Awards

He was a member of the Board of Directors for the Network for the Development of Social Sciences. This group was a place for people to discuss ideas about Peru's social issues. He also led the Association of Sociologists of Peru as their Dean.

In 2008, he started the first program for Cultural Studies in Peru. This program helped him continue his research on cultural topics. A famous historian named Alberto Flores Galindo greatly influenced his work.

Gonzalo Portocarrero received many honors for his work. He was given the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the National University of the Center of Peru. He also won the National Culture Award from the Ministry of Culture.

His Passing

Gonzalo Portocarrero passed away on March 21, 2019. He was 69 years old and died from lung cancer.
