Good Intent: A Look at Its Past
Good Intent has a long and interesting history. It started as a small settlement and grew over time.
Early Days and Mills
One of the first people to settle here was George Ward. In 1701, he bought a large piece of land, about 250 acres. Soon after, he built some small mills on his property. Mills were important back then for grinding grain or processing other materials.
Factories and Fires
In 1829, a special factory was built in Good Intent. This factory made cloth. It was a big building with three stories. Sadly, in 1840, a fire destroyed the factory. But the people of Good Intent didn't give up! They quickly rebuilt it. About eight years later, another fire burned it down again. And once more, it was rebuilt.
Mail and Manufacturing
Travel and communication also improved in Good Intent. In 1834, a mail stage coach started running. This coach would leave Good Intent every morning, except on Sundays, to deliver mail.
In 1836, another important factory opened. This one made handles for tools like pitchforks and shovels. The wood for the handles was brought in by boats called scows. Once the handles were finished, they were sent to Philadelphia, a big city nearby.
Community Life and Roads
During the 1840s, there was a church in Good Intent, known as the Good Intent Church. This shows that the community was growing and had places for people to gather.
Getting to Good Intent became easier in 1853. A better road was built from a town called Williamstown (which was known as "Squankum" back then) all the way to Good Intent. This helped people and goods travel more easily.
