Gooseberry is a small, unincorporated community located in Morrow County, Oregon, in the United States. An unincorporated community means it's a group of homes or buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. It's found along the Ione–Gooseberry Road. This road is close to where it meets Oregon Route 206. Gooseberry is situated between the towns of Heppner to the east and Condon to the west.
How Gooseberry Got Its Name
The area around Gooseberry has a long history. As early as 1872, people who raised cattle (called cattlemen) started calling this spot Gooseberry Spring. They gave it this name because there was a very large wild gooseberry bush growing right near a natural spring.
Gooseberry's Post Office
For many years, Gooseberry was a busy enough place to have its own post office. This post office helped people send and receive letters and packages. It was open from 1884 until 1918. After 1918, the post office closed, but the name "Gooseberry" stuck around for the community.
