A Look Back at Gordonsville's Past
How Gordonsville Started
Gordonsville began to grow in the 1800s. In 1862, a special building called a post office was opened there. A post office is where people send and receive letters and packages. This post office helped the community connect with the outside world.
The Gordon Family's Role
The community got its name from two important people: T. J. Gordon and his son, W. H. H. Gordon. Both of them worked as early postmasters. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office. They helped make sure mail got to the right places.
When Gordonsville Became Official
Years later, in 1880, Gordonsville was platted. When a place is platted, it means that its streets, blocks, and lots are officially drawn out on a map. This helps organize the community and plan for future growth. The post office stayed open for a long time, serving the people of Gordonsville until it closed in 1965.
