What Gossner Foods Makes
Gossner Foods is a company that loves cheese! While they are famous for their Swiss cheese, they actually make about 30 different kinds of cheese. Imagine all those delicious flavors!
They also make a special kind of milk called UHT (Ultra-High Temperature) milk. This milk is heated very quickly to a super high temperature. This process makes the milk last a long time without needing to be refrigerated until you open it. It's great for selling in stores and even for supplying to the military around the world.
Where Gossner Foods Operates
The main office for Gossner Foods is in Logan, Utah. They also have another factory in Heyburn, Idaho. Together, these locations employ more than 600 people. That's a lot of people working to make cheese and milk!
Gossner Foods gets its milk from about 300 farm families. These farms are located across Utah and Idaho. This means they support many local farmers.
As of 2018, the person in charge of the company, called the CEO, is Kristan Jo Earl.
The Story of Gossner Foods
The story of Gossner Foods began with a man named Edwin Gossner Sr. He was born in 1909 in a place called Edliswil-Waldkirch, which is in Switzerland. Switzerland is famous for its cheese, so it's no surprise he became a cheese expert!
In 1930, Edwin moved to Burke, Wisconsin, in the United States. He started working at his brother's cheese factory. For three years, he learned all about making cheese. His brother had learned special techniques from the Swiss Cheesemaking School.
Building a Cheese Empire
Sadly, the factory where Edwin worked burned down in 1937. After that, Edwin moved to California and worked for another cheese company.
In 1941, Edwin Gossner decided to open his own cheese factory. He chose a place called Cache Valley, Utah. He picked this spot because the weather and the height above sea level were very similar to Switzerland. Plus, there was lots of fresh milk from local farms.
His factory grew very quickly. By 1946, it was the biggest Swiss cheese factory in the world! They were making 120 large wheels of cheese every single day. Each wheel weighed about 200 pounds (90 kilograms)!
Finally, in 1966, Edwin Gossner founded the company we know today as Gossner Foods.
