Gotha is a rural district, also known as a Kreis, located in the middle of Thuringia, Germany. A rural district is like a county or a region that includes several towns and villages. The main city in this district is also called Gotha.

History of Gotha District

The Gotha district was created on October 1, 1922. At that time, the new state of Thuringia was divided into 15 rural districts (called Landkreise) and 9 cities that were independent (called Stadtkreise). This helped organize the different areas of the state.

Partnerships

Since 1990, the Gotha district has been partners with the Main-Kinzig Rural District. This district is located in Hesse, another state in Germany. Partnerships like this help different regions work together and learn from each other.

Coat of Arms

Coat of arms of Gotha District The coat of arms for the Gotha district tells a story about its history.
  • The top part shows the famous Friedenstein Castle. This is the largest baroque building in the city of Gotha.
  • The wavy line below the castle stands for the Leina canal. This important canal was built a long time ago, between 1366 and 1369. Its purpose was to bring fresh water from Schönau into the city of Gotha.
  • The star at the bottom of the shield was a symbol for the old Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. A duchy was a type of territory ruled by a duke.

The Gotha district was officially given this coat of arms on June 28, 1991.
