Gotley Glacier is a large river of ice found on Heard Island. This island is a small, icy place in the southern Indian Ocean. The glacier is about 13.2 kilometers (8.2 miles) long. It flows down from the icy slopes of a big mountain called Big Ben.
The end of the glacier, called its terminus, is located between two points. These points are named Cape Arkona and Cape Labuan. Gotley Glacier is surrounded by other glaciers. To its east is Deacock Glacier. To its northwest is Lied Glacier. Cape Arkona helps separate Gotley Glacier from Lied Glacier.
Finding and Naming Gotley Glacier
Scientists from the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions studied Gotley Glacier in 1948. They named it after Aubrey V. Gotley. He was a meteorologist, a scientist who studies weather. He was also in charge of the group that explored the area.
