Grästorp's Past: A Look at Its History

The area around Grästorp has a long history. People have lived here since at least the Viking Age. You can still find several runestones in the area. These stones are like ancient messages carved into rock.
In the year 1900, the village of Grästorp became a special type of town called a köping, or market town. This meant it had certain rights for trade. Later, in 1952, Grästorp joined with twelve other nearby municipalities. One of these was Tengene, which Grästorp had originally been part of.
In 1971, the term köping was no longer used for towns in Sweden. So, Grästorp Municipality officially became what it is today, without changing its borders.
Ancient Messages: The Sal Runestone
One interesting runestone is found near the church at Sal. The carving on this stone tells a story. It says: "Torgård raised this stone for Toke, his kinsman." This gives us a glimpse into the lives of people from long ago.
Discovering Grästorp's Main Town
The main town in the municipality is also called Grästorp. It is the only larger built-up area here. About 3,000 people live in the town of Grästorp. The rest of the municipality is mostly rural, meaning it has more countryside and fewer large towns.
