Gröde or Gröde-Appelland is a tiny island and a special type of community called a municipality in northern Germany. It's located in the Nordfriesland district of Schleswig-Holstein. People also call it Grøde in Danish, Groue in North Frisian, and Grööd in Low German.
Gröde is one of the ten small islands known as Halligen. These islands are unique because they are very low and often get flooded by the sea during high tides. Only the houses, built on raised mounds called Warften, stay dry.

Discovering Gröde: Germany's Smallest Community
Gröde is famous for being the smallest municipality in all of Germany. This means it has the fewest people living in it compared to any other town or village in the country.
A Tiny Population with Big Spirit
Only 9 people call Gröde home. Imagine living in a place where you know everyone! This small number of residents makes Gröde truly special.
The Smallest Voting District
Because so few people live there, Gröde also has the smallest electoral district (voting area) in Germany. When it's time to vote, the results from Gröde are usually known almost immediately after the voting places close. This is because there are so few votes to count!
Life and Work on Gröde Island
Life on Gröde is peaceful and closely connected to nature. The people living there have found ways to make a living on their small island.
How People Earn a Living
The main ways people make money on Gröde are through tourism and a bit of agriculture.
- Tourism: Visitors come to Gröde to enjoy the quiet nature, the unique Hallig landscape, and to experience island life. They might stay in guesthouses or visit for the day.
- Agriculture: Some farming still happens on the island, but it's usually on a small scale due to the limited land and the risk of flooding.
Understanding Gröde's Government
Even though Gröde is tiny, it's part of a larger administrative system in Germany.
Part of the Pellworm Amt
Gröde belongs to an administrative division called an Amt. Think of an Amt as a group of smaller communities that work together for some government services. Gröde is part of the Amt of Pellworm. The main office for this Amt is located on the larger island of Pellworm. This means that some of the day-to-day running of Gröde is managed from Pellworm.
