Bird Visitors in Graceham
Starting in 1973, Graceham experienced a unique challenge. Millions of starlings, grackles, and other birds began visiting the area. These large groups of birds caused problems for the environment and for the people living there.
Efforts to Manage Bird Populations
To try and solve the bird issue, the Maryland Forestry Department took action. They removed about 30-40% of the local pine grove. This was an attempt to reduce the number of birds coming to the area. The following year, the number of birds did decrease. However, this solution did not last forever.
Community Action for a Solution
By 1977, the bird problem returned. Residents and experts spoke to the Senate Economic Affairs Committee. They supported new laws that would allow for better ways to handle the large bird populations. This showed how important the issue was to the community.
