Where is Grady Located?
Grady is found in the eastern part of New Mexico. It sits on a large, flat area known as the Llano Estacado. This area is sometimes called the "Staked Plains."
The village itself is quite small. It covers an area of about 0.2 square miles (0.69 square kilometers). All of this land is dry land, with no lakes or rivers inside the village limits.
A Look at Grady's History
Grady was started in 1907. It grew as a community of farmers and ranchers. The village got its name from Pearl B. Grady. She owned most of the land where the town was built. Pearl Grady was also the first person to run the post office there.
People thought Grady would become a big railroad stop. The Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway (ATSF) was planning to build a depot there. However, the railroad ended up bypassing Grady.
Early Businesses and Challenges
In its early days, Grady had many businesses. There was a hotel, two grocery stores, and even a bank. The village also had a doctor, a dentist, and a drugstore. You could find a café and a lumber and hardware store too.
But Grady faced some tough times. In 1925, a big fire swept through the village. It destroyed almost all the businesses on the south side. Only the hotel survived.
Years later, in February 1952, a tornado hit Grady. Many homes were damaged or completely destroyed.
Population Changes Over Time
Since the 1960s, Grady's population has stayed around 100 people. Most residents are older farmers. The local public school is a very important part of the community. However, fewer students are enrolling each year.
