Grahamtown is a small community in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. It is located right next to the town of Frostburg. Grahamtown is known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's also a "census-designated place" (CDP), which is a special area the U.S. Census Bureau uses to count people.
Population Facts
The United States Census Bureau counts how many people live in different areas every ten years. In 2020, the census showed that 368 people lived in Grahamtown. This community is part of a larger area called the Cumberland, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area.
What's in a Name?
Grahamtown got its name from a person named Curtis M. Graham. He owned a farmhouse and other small buildings in this area back in the 1880s. Sadly, that old farmhouse was badly damaged by a fire in 1995.
Grahamtown is also known by another name: Wright's Crossing. This name comes from a point where Maryland Route 36 crosses a place called Welsh Hill. Wright's Crossing was named after The Wright Farm. This large farm belonged to Henry Wright, who was one of the first settlers in Allegany County. The Wright Farm was once part of a big colonial estate known as Walnut Level.
