Granados is a town and area, also called a municipality, located in the Baja Verapaz department in Guatemala. It got its name in 1893 from a past president of Guatemala, Miguel García Granados.

About Granados: Location and History
Granados is found at the bottom of the Chuacus Mountains. It sits in the deep valley of the Motagua River. This makes it the furthest town from Salamá, which is the capital of the Baja Verapaz department.
How Granados Got Its Name
The town was named after General Miguel García Granados. He was a former president and a key leader of the Liberal Revolution in 1871. President General José María Reina Barrios officially signed a document on January 13, 1893, to give the town this name.
Size and Local Drinks
Granados covers an area of about 248 square kilometers. It is well-known in the area for its tasty drinks. People especially enjoy beverages made from Rosa de Jamaica (hibiscus) and Tamarind.
Granados Population
According to a 1994 study by the National Statistics Institute, Granados has a population of 10,096 people. About 10% of the people are native to the area. The rest are "ladinos," which refers to people of mixed Indigenous and European heritage in Guatemala.
Main Religious Celebrations
Granados has a rich history of religious celebrations. From 1960 to 2000, the main Catholic celebration was on June 29. This day honored Saint Peter, who was the town's first patron saint.
The Black Christ of Granados
Later, a statue known as the Black Christ of Granados became very important. It then became the official patron saint of the municipality. Because of this, the main celebration moved to January 15.
Two Celebrations
However, starting in 2015, Granados decided to have two big celebrations. One is still in June for Saint Peter, the patron saint of the town itself. The other is in January, honoring the Black Christ of Granados, who is the patron saint of the whole municipality.

Granados experiences a tropical savanna climate. This type of climate is known for having warm temperatures all year. It also has a wet season and a dry season.

Geographic Location
Granados is found in the southern part of the Baja Verapaz Department. It is located about 35 miles away from Guatemala City.
