In 1882, a group of fourteen Union Civil War veterans decided to create this cemetery. They were members of a group called the Grand Army of the Republic. These veterans formed the Grand Army Cemetery Association and bought the land.
Soon after, the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War took over managing the cemetery. They helped make sure the cemetery was well cared for. The oldest grave marker in the cemetery is from October 15, 1889.
Who Owns the Cemetery Now?
Over the years, the ownership of the cemetery changed hands a few times. First, it belonged to the State of Oregon in 1961. Then, in 1971, it was given to Multnomah County, Oregon.
Finally, in 1996, ownership was given to Metro Regional Parks and Greenspaces. Metro is a local government group that manages parks and natural areas in the Portland area.
