Discovering Grand Central Mall's History
The Grand Central Mall first opened in 1972. It was the only enclosed shopping mall in the Mid-Ohio Valley region. When it first opened, it had several major stores. These included The Diamond, JCPenney, Sears, and a G.C. Murphy dime store.
Changes to Early Stores
The Diamond store closed in 1983. It later became a store called Stone & Thomas. In 1998, Stone & Thomas changed again. It became a store named Elder-Beerman. A discount pharmacy chain called Phar-Mor also opened in the mall.
Mall Ownership and Big Expansions
Glimcher Realty Trust bought the mall in 1993. Three years later, they spent $8 million to make the mall bigger. This expansion added a new food court. It also brought in a brand new movie theater.
Another part of this expansion added a Proffitt's store. This store is now known as Belk. It was one of the first Proffitt's stores in West Virginia.
Recent Store Changes and Closures
The Phar-Mor store closed in 2002. Its space was later taken over by Steve & Barry's. However, Steve & Barry's closed all its stores in September 2008. Today, the space where Steve & Barry's used to be is home to Dunham's Sports.
In November 2017, it was announced that Elder-Beerman would close. It officially closed in January 2018. A part of that store's space became the first H&M store in West Virginia.
Then, in September 2018, Sears announced its closure. The Sears store at Grand Central Mall closed in December 2018.
