Grand Centre, now known as Cold Lake South, is a place in Alberta, Canada. It used to be a town. It started as a village in 1957. Later, in 1996, it joined with two other places. These were Cold Lake to the north and Medley to the west. Medley is a community on a military base called CFB Cold Lake. Together, they formed a new city named Cold Lake. Grand Centre is about 541 meters (1,775 feet) above sea level.

A Look Back: Grand Centre's History

Grand Centre has an interesting past. It officially became a village on January 1, 1957. This meant it had its own local government. Just 16 months later, on April 1, 1958, it grew and became a town.

Merging to Form Cold Lake

On October 1, 1996, Grand Centre joined with the nearby town of Cold Lake. This process is called an amalgamation. It means two or more places combine to form a new, larger municipality. The community of Medley, located on the CFB Cold Lake military base, also became part of this new area at the same time.

The new combined town was named Cold Lake. Then, on October 1, 2000, Cold Lake officially became a city. Today, the area that was once Grand Centre is called Cold Lake South. The original town of Cold Lake is now known as Cold Lake North.

How Many People Lived There?

Studying demographics means looking at how populations change over time. Before Grand Centre joined with Cold Lake, about 4,176 people lived there in 1996. This number comes from the 1996 census. A census is like a big count of all the people living in a country.

Even after becoming part of the City of Cold Lake, the area known as Cold Lake South continued to grow. By the 2016 census, its population had reached 6,148 people. This shows that the community has steadily grown over the years.
