The Grand Pabos West River is a beautiful river located in Quebec, Canada. You can find it on the Gaspé Peninsula. This river starts high up in the Chic-Choc Mountains, near a place called Mont-Alexandre, Quebec.
The Grand Pabos West River is about 47.3 kilometres (29.4 mi) long. Its name comes from the Mi'kmaq word pabog. This word means "tranquility waters," which sounds very peaceful!
Fishing for Atlantic Salmon
The Grand Pabos West River is famous for its Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar). These amazing fish live in the river. From the 1880s to the 1950s, many people came here to fish for salmon. It was a very popular spot!
However, too much fishing caused a big problem. By 1984, there were almost no salmon left in the river. Because of this, fishing was stopped to help the salmon recover. Luckily, the river was reopened for fishing in 2003. This means the salmon population has grown back!
The water in the Pabos West River has a special copper color. It's not as clear as the other two Pabos rivers, but you can still see through it quite well.
How to Visit the River
It's easy to get to the Grand Pabos West River. You can reach it by using Quebec Route 132. This road runs along the coast.
Fishing on the river is carefully managed. An organization helps to look after salmon fishing on all three Pabos rivers. These are the Grand Pabos West River, the Grand Pabos River, and the Petit Pabos River. This makes it easy for people to fish in all three rivers during one trip.
