The Petit Pabos River is a beautiful river located in Quebec, Canada. It flows through the Gaspé Peninsula, a part of Quebec known for its stunning nature. The river starts high up in the Chic-Choc Mountains, near a place called Mont-Alexandre, Quebec. It stretches for about 61.6 kilometres (38.3 mi), which is roughly 38 miles. The name "Pabos" comes from the Mi'kmaq language, an Indigenous language. It means "tranquility waters," which perfectly describes this peaceful river.
Fishing for Atlantic Salmon
The Petit Pabos River is famous for its Atlantic salmon fishing. These amazing fish live in the river's super clear blue water. The river is surrounded by deep forests, making it a beautiful place to visit.
History of Salmon Fishing
For many years, from the 1880s to the 1950s, the Petit Pabos River was a very popular spot for salmon fishing. However, too many salmon were caught during this time. By 1984, the number of salmon had dropped so much that the river had to be closed to fishing. This helped the salmon population recover.
Salmon Today
Good news! The river was reopened for fishing in 2003. While the Petit Pabos River is smaller than its neighbors, the Grand Pabos River and the Grand Pabos West River, it is still a great place to fish. It might have fewer salmon than the bigger rivers, but many people think it is even more beautiful and less crowded.
How to Visit and Fish
You can easily reach the Petit Pabos River by following Quebec Route 132. An organization helps manage salmon fishing on all three Pabos Rivers. This makes it simple to plan a fishing trip that includes the Petit Pabos River and its two larger neighbors.
