Grandy's Country Cookin' (often called Grandy's) is a restaurant chain known for its "homestyle" or "comfort" food. It started in 1972 and is based in Nashville, Tennessee. Grandy's serves meals that remind people of home-cooked dishes.
The Start of Grandy's
Walter E. Johnson and Rex E. Sanders first met when they were teenagers. They worked together at a restaurant in Oak Cliff, Dallas. In the early 1960s, they opened a small fried chicken stand. This stand grew into a chain of 14 restaurants.
Later, they sold this first chain of restaurants. After a short break, Johnson and Sanders decided to create a new restaurant. They wanted to mix the speed of fast food with the cozy feeling of a full-service restaurant. In 1977, they officially named their new chain Grandy's.
Growing and Changing Owners
Grandy's grew a lot in the 1980s. At its busiest, there were almost 200 Grandy's restaurants. This growth happened when Saga Foods, Inc. owned the company. Saga Foods was a large company that owned many different types of restaurants.
After a few years, a company called Marriott Corporation bought Saga Foods. Marriott then sold Grandy's to another company, American Restaurant Group. In the late 1990s, some older Grandy's locations that were not doing well began to close. The company decided to focus on its main areas, especially in Texas and Oklahoma. They also kept a strong presence in southern Indiana and northern Kentucky.
In 2000, American Restaurant Group sold Grandy's to Spectrum Restaurant Group. Spectrum faced financial problems and filed for bankruptcy in 2006. They then put Grandy's up for sale.
New Owners and Today
In 2007, a company called Souper Salad bought Grandy's. However, Souper Salad also faced financial difficulties and filed for bankruptcy in 2011.
On December 19, 2011, Captain D's, another restaurant chain, bought Grandy's. Captain D's still owns Grandy's today.
As of April 2024, Grandy's has 23 restaurants. These locations are spread across six states: Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Many of these restaurants are still in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex area.
