Grant Hutchison (born 13 June 1984) is a Scottish drummer. He is famous for being the drummer of the indie rock band Frightened Rabbit. With this band, he recorded five studio albums. In 2022, Grant joined another band called The Twilight Sad. This was after taking a break from music for four years. His break followed the sad passing of his brother and bandmate, Scott Hutchison.
Frightened Rabbit started as a solo project by Grant's brother, Scott. Grant joined in 2004, making it a duo. They recorded the band's first album, Sing the Greys (2006). Grant played on all of Frightened Rabbit's music. He also helped write songs for their fourth album, Pedestrian Verse (2013).
In 2018, Grant and Scott formed a new band called Mastersystem. They created one album, Dance Music, that same year.

Grant's Early Life
Grant Hutchison grew up in Selkirk, Scotland. He lived with his older brothers, Scott and Neil. Their mother used to call Scott "Frightened Rabbit," which later became the band's name. Grant, being the youngest, was called "The Bairn." He said he was very energetic, like the Warner Brothers’ Tasmanian Devil. He was the opposite of Scott.
Playing Drums with Frightened Rabbit
In 2004, Grant moved to Glasgow and joined his brother Scott in Frightened Rabbit. This made them a two-person band. Grant explained that Scott was playing solo shows. Since Grant was the only drummer Scott knew, he got the job. He joined to make their music "a little bit noisier!" Grant and Scott then recorded their first album, Sing the Greys, in 2006.
Grant hoped for big things for the band. He wanted to sell out a venue called King Tut's in Glasgow. He also hoped to sign with Fat Cat. Later, they even got an album into the top ten. Grant always wanted to keep growing and never feel like they had "arrived."
The band's next two albums, The Midnight Organ Fight (2008) and The Winter of Mixed Drinks (2010), helped them gain many more fans. For these albums, Scott usually wrote the songs first. Then, Grant would add his drum ideas, and they would work on it together.
For their fourth album, Pedestrian Verse (2013), the songwriting process changed. Scott included Grant and the other band members more. Grant said he had much more input. He helped shape songs and take them in new directions. He enjoyed having a real impact on the music. Before, he mostly just played drums to songs that were already finished. This time, he played along to very basic tracks. Sometimes, they didn't even have a melody yet. This was a new and great experience for him. The band's fifth album, Painting of a Panic Attack, came out in 2016.
In 2018, Grant played drums with Scott and brothers Justin and James Lockey. This was for their project called Mastersystem. They released one album.
Scott's death in May 2018 meant that Frightened Rabbit stopped being an active band. However, Grant still played drums as a Frightened Rabbit member later that year. He performed with bandmate Billy Kennedy at the Belladrum Festival. This was part of a tribute by The Charlatans. He also played with the band and guest singers at a charity event in Glasgow in December 2018.
Other Music Projects
In 2013, Grant mentioned he might work on his own music. He hoped to start something with friends in Glasgow. He had some songs he was working on. He thought it would be nice to do something else, even though he loved playing in Frightened Rabbit.
In 2018, Grant played on Let's Be Wilderness. This was the second album by Postdata. In 2019, he and fellow Frightened Rabbit member Simon Liddell played with Australian musician Gretta Ray during her UK concerts.
Grant's Life Outside Music
Grant has often thanked his parents for supporting him and Scott with Frightened Rabbit. He said they were always there for him. He believes they were just as important to the band's success as he and Scott were.
Grant once joked about what he would do if he wasn't a musician. He said he had no other skills. He might work in a cheese shop or try to make his own cider. He felt that everything he did because of Frightened Rabbit made him who he is today. After the band ended, Grant started a company in 2019. It imports and distributes cider and is called Re:stalk.
Grant and his wife, Jaye, got married in 2018. They have two daughters, born in 2020 and 2023. In 2021, the couple opened Aeble. It is a cider bottle shop in Anstruther.
Grant supports the Cystinosis Foundation UK. He was also a trustee for Tiny Changes. This is a mental health charity started by his family in 2019. It was created after his brother Scott passed away. Grant has taken part in several charity sports events. These include The Great Big Cycle in 2014 and the Great Scottish Run half-marathon in Glasgow in 2018.
