Grant Ernest John Tambling (20 June 1943 – 24 January 2025) was an important Australian politician. He was a member of the House of Representatives from 1980 to 1983. Later, he became a Senator for the Northern Territory from 1987 to 2001. He represented the Country Liberal Party. In the federal parliament, he was part of the National Party. After his time in parliament, he served as the Administrator of Norfolk Island from 2003 to 2007.

Early Life and Education
Grant Tambling was born in Wondai, Queensland. He grew up in Darwin in the Northern Territory. He went to Darwin High School and Adelaide Boys' High School. After school, he returned to Darwin before moving to Sydney for work.
A Career in Politics
Grant Tambling had a long career in politics. He started in local government on the Darwin City Council.
Northern Territory Politics
Tambling was elected to the first Northern Territory Legislative Assembly. He represented the Country Liberal Party for the area of Fannie Bay. In this first parliament, he was an Executive Member for Community Development. This role was similar to a minister today.
In 1975, he became the deputy leader of the Country Liberal Party. This made him the Deputy Majority Leader, like a deputy premier. He served under Majority Leader Goff Letts. However, he lost his seat in the 1977 Northern Territory general election. After this, he started a career in business.
Federal Parliament Roles
Tambling later became a member of the Australian House of Representatives. He represented the Northern Territory from 1980 to 1983. He was part of the National Country Party. He lost his seat in the 1983 Australian federal election to John Reeves.
After a few years, Tambling was elected to the Australian Senate in 1987. He replaced Bernie Kilgariff as Senator for the Northern Territory. He continued to be part of the National Party. Grant Tambling is the only person from the Northern Territory to have served in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
He was also a Deputy National Party Leader in the Senate for two periods. He also worked as a parliamentary secretary in the Howard government for almost six years.
Tambling served as a Senator for fourteen years. He retired from politics in 2001. After retiring, he worked as a private consultant for two years.
Administrator of Norfolk Island
In 2003, Grant Tambling was appointed the Administrator of Norfolk Island. This was an important role where he helped manage the island. He served in this position until 2007.
Personal Life
Grant Tambling was married to Sandy Tambling. They had two children. He passed away on 24 January 2025, at the age of 81.
