Grant Ernest John Tambling AM (born June 20, 1943 – died January 26, 2025) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the House of Representatives from 1980 to 1983. Later, he became a Senator for the Northern Territory from 1987 to 2001. He represented the Country Liberal Party during his time in parliament. He also served as the Administrator of Norfolk Island from 2003 to 2007.

Early Life and Education

Grant Tambling was born in Wondai, Queensland. He grew up in Darwin, which is in the Northern Territory. He went to Darwin High School and Adelaide Boys' High School. After school, he returned to Darwin before moving to Sydney for work.

Political Career

Grant Tambling started his political journey in local government. He was a member of the Darwin City Council. Later, he was elected to the first Northern Territory Legislative Assembly. He represented the Country Liberal Party for the area of Fannie Bay.

In this first parliament, Tambling served as an Executive Member for Community Development. This role was similar to what we call a minister today. In 1975, he became the deputy leader of the Country Liberal Party. This made him the Deputy Majority Leader, like a deputy premier.

However, he lost his seat in the 1977 election to Pam O'Neil. After this, he worked in business for a while.

Serving in Federal Parliament

In 1980, Tambling was elected to the House of Representatives. He represented the Northern Territory electorate. He served until 1983, when he was defeated by John Reeves.

After four years, Tambling was elected again, this time to the Senate. This happened in the 1987 federal election. He served as a Senator for fourteen years. He is the only person from the Northern Territory to have served in both houses of the Australian federal parliament.

He also held an important leadership role in the Senate. He was the deputy leader of the National Party in the Senate twice. The first time was from 1990 to 1993, and the second time was from 2000 to 2001. He also worked as a parliamentary secretary in the Howard government for almost six years.

Tambling left politics after the 2001 election. This was because his party did not support him for re-election. He then worked as a private consultant for two years. Grant Tambling passed away on January 26, 2025, at the age of 81.

Administrator of Norfolk Island

After his time in federal politics, Grant Tambling took on a new role. He was appointed as the Administrator of Norfolk Island. This is a special role where he represented the Australian government on the island. He served in this position from November 1, 2003, until August 7, 2007.

Personal Life

Grant Tambling was married and had two children.
