History of Granville

The village of Granville got its name from a town called Granville, Massachusetts. For a long time, Granville was mainly a farming area.

In the early 1900s, things changed when coal mines opened nearby. The St. Paul Mine started in 1903 in the neighboring town of Mark, and the Berry Mine opened in 1905 in Standard. These mines helped Granville grow from just a farming center into a busy place for businesses in the coal mining region.

On April 20, 2004, a series of tornadoes hit Granville. These storms caused a lot of damage. They destroyed the local primary school, the high school baseball field, and many homes in the village.
