Gray is a special kind of community called a census-designated place (CDP) in Washington County, Tennessee, United States. It's like a small town or neighborhood that the government counts for population, but it doesn't have its own city government. Gray is a suburb of Johnson City. It's part of the larger Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area. This area is also part of the "Tri-Cities" region, which includes Johnson City, Kingsport, and Bristol in Tennessee and Virginia. In 2020, about 1,293 people lived in Gray.
Gray is located right near where two big highways meet: Interstate 81 and Interstate 26. Interstate 26 actually goes right through the town! Gray was first called Gray Station, Tennessee. This was because it started as a place where trains would stop, like a railway depot. Over time, people just started calling it Gray. For many years, Gray was mostly farms. But in the 1990s, more houses and suburban areas began to appear. Since 2000, Gray has continued to grow. New restaurants and stores have opened, making it a busier place. A cool museum opened in 2007. It's connected to the Gray Fossil Site, where many old animal fossils were found during road construction in 2000. Some parts of Gray have even become part of Johnson City.
Learning in Gray
Gray has public schools for its young residents. The only public elementary school, Gray Elementary, became very crowded. To help with this, a new school called Ridgeview Elementary was built and opened in 2008. Before Ridgeview opened, Gray Elementary had over 1,000 students. After the new school opened, both schools had more than 600 students each. For older students, Gray's only high school is Daniel Boone High School.
