History
Gray has a long and interesting history. Since the Middle Ages, it was a very important river port. This means boats could easily bring goods in and out of the town using the river.
Because of its port, Gray became a major trading center in the area known as Franche-Comté. People would buy and sell many different things here.
The name "Gray" might come from an old family who owned land in the area. Their family name was "Gradus," which is similar to the Celtic word "Grady." Both these names mean "illustrious" or "noble," suggesting the family was important.
Geography
Gray is located right on the banks of the Saône river. This river is very important for the town.
It is the last big town in the Haute-Saône department before the Saône river flows into the next area, called Côte-d'Or. Its location on the river made it a key spot for trade and travel for many years.
