How Grazing Goat Pictures Started
Akshay Kumar had already started another production company called Hari Om Entertainment in 2008. Ashvini Yardi used to work as a top programming head for TV channels like Colors and Zee TV.
When Ashvini Yardi read the script for OMG – Oh My God!, she decided to produce it. So, she teamed up with Akshay Kumar to launch Grazing Goat Pictures. The company's main office is in Juhu, Mumbai. Akshay Kumar's wife, Twinkle Khanna, designed the inside of the office.
Making Hindi Films
The company's first film was OMG – Oh My God!. It was a satirical comedy–drama directed by Umesh Shukla. Grazing Goat Pictures worked with other companies like Viacom 18 Motion Pictures to make it.
The movie was based on a play called Kanji Virudh Kanji. It was also inspired by an Australian film from 2001 called The Man Who Sued God. The story is about a man who doesn't believe in God. His shop is destroyed by an earthquake, so he decides to sue God. Akshay Kumar played the role of Lord Krishna in the film.
Critics had different opinions about the movie. Some praised it for showing how religion can be misused. Others felt that some parts were boring. At first, the movie didn't make much money. But then, many people talked about it, and it became a big success.
The film faced some challenges. It was banned in Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates. It also had protests in Punjab. Some people felt the movie hurt religious feelings. The writers and director won the National Film Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
OMG – Oh My God! was so popular that it inspired a Telugu remake. This remake was called Gopala Gopala. Akshay Kumar has said he wants to make more "socially relevant" films.
The company's second film was Fugly, a drama thriller directed by Kabir Sadanand. It introduced new actors like Mohit Marwah and Kiara Advani. Olympic boxer Vijender Singh also acted in it. Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan made special guest appearances.
The story is about four friends who are framed for a murder by a corrupt police officer. The film did not get good reviews from critics. Many felt it was not well-made or that the story was confusing.
In 2015, Akshay Kumar starred in the comedy-drama Singh Is Bliing. This movie was directed by Prabhu Deva. It earned a lot of money around the world.
Making Regional Films
Akshay Kumar and Ashvini Yardi also started making films in other Indian languages. Their first Marathi film was 72 Miles Ek Pravas. This movie was based on a novel. It told the story of a teenage boy who runs away from his boarding school. He tries to travel 72 miles to get back home.
The film won three awards at the 2013–2014 Maharashtra State Film Awards. Critics praised the movie for its emotional story. It was also shown at film festivals in London and Pune International Film Festivals. The company also planned another Marathi film called Anntar, which was filmed in London.
Their next regional film was the Punjabi language comedy Bhaji in Problem (2013). This movie was made with Viacom 18 Motion Pictures. It was directed by Smeep Kang. The film was made with a small budget but earned a lot of money. People in Punjab were very excited to watch it. Akshay Kumar made a guest appearance in this film. Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh also appeared in the movie.
After the success of these regional films, Akshay Kumar said he would produce more movies in different languages. Ashvini Yardi mentioned that they want Grazing Goat Pictures to become a global company. She also plans to produce Bengali films.
