The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company Warehouse is a historic building located at 150 Bay Street in Jersey City, New Jersey. It was built in 1900. This building was once a large warehouse for The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, also known as A&P. A&P was the first major grocery store chain in the United States.

This warehouse is an important reminder of A&P's early history. It was part of a bigger group of five buildings. In 1978, it was named a National Historic Landmark. Today, the building has been changed and now holds both homes and storage spaces.

About This Historic Building

The old A&P warehouse is found near the center of downtown Jersey City. It stands between 1st and Bay Streets, on the west side of Prevost Street. The building is nine stories tall. It is made from strong materials like steel and reinforced concrete. Some parts of its walls are made of red brick.

What Does It Look Like?

The building is about 220 feet long and 180 feet wide. It used to have more than 360,000 square feet of space inside. Its outside walls have a cool design. They are divided into rectangles by vertical lines and horizontal bands of concrete. Most of these sections have several windows and some brickwork.

The three sides of the building that face the street have a decorative edge at the top. These three sides also used to have large bays at ground level for trucks to load and unload goods. The east side of the building even had a special track for trains to bring supplies.

A&P's Story and the Warehouse

The Turner Construction Company built this warehouse in 1900 for A&P. The A&P company started in New York City around 1859. At first, they imported goods from other countries. In 1864, A&P opened its first grocery store in Manhattan.

The company grew very quickly. By 1930, A&P had more than 15,000 stores across the country. They had stores as far west as Saint Paul, Minnesota. The Jersey City complex, where this warehouse was, had five buildings. These buildings were used to make and store the company's products. A&P sold this specific warehouse building in 1929.

Today, this historic building has a new life. It contains many apartments for people to live in. It also has a large storage facility for different items.
