Great Bend is a small community called a hamlet in Jefferson County, New York, United States. It is also known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's an area defined for counting people by the census. In 2010, about 843 people lived here.
Great Bend is located in the northern part of the town of Champion. It is right next to the southern part of Fort Drum, which is a large military base.

Geography of Great Bend
Great Bend is found in the eastern part of Jefferson County. Its exact location is 44°2′11″N 75°42′30″W / 44.03639°N 75.70833°W. The community gets its name from the Black River, which makes a big curve, or "bend," around the area.
The Black River borders Great Bend to the northeast and northwest. Across the river to the northwest is Fort Drum, located in the town of Le Ray. To the northeast, across the river, is the village of Deferiet, which is in the town of Wilna.
Area and Water Features
The Great Bend area covers about 15.1 square kilometers (about 5.8 square miles). Most of this area, about 15.0 square kilometers (5.79 square miles), is land. A small part, about 0.1 square kilometers (0.09 square miles), is water, making up less than 1% of the total area.
Main Roads and Connections
Great Bend is an important crossroads where three main routes meet: New York State Route 3, New York State Route 26, and County Road 47.
- Route 3 goes east and southeast for about 7 miles (11 km) to Carthage, passing through Deferiet first. It also goes west for about 10 miles (16 km) to Watertown, which is the main city of Jefferson County.
- Route 26 travels northwest across Fort Drum for about 6 miles (10 km) to Evans Mills. It also heads southeast for about 7 miles (11 km) to West Carthage.

In the year 2000, there were 801 people living in Great Bend. These people lived in 313 households, and 210 of these were families. The population density was about 136 people per square mile (52 people per square kilometer). There were also 348 housing units, like houses or apartments.
Diversity of Residents
Most people in Great Bend in 2000 were White (92.38%). Other groups included African American (2.12%), Native American (1.00%), and Asian (0.62%). Some people (0.62%) were from other racial backgrounds, and 3.25% identified with two or more races. About 0.87% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
