West Carthage is a small village located in Jefferson County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 1,780 people lived there.

West Carthage is part of the town of Champion. It is located near the eastern border of this town. The village is east of Watertown. It is also right next to the village of Carthage. To the south of West Carthage, you will find Fort Drum.

History of West Carthage

Settlers first arrived in the area around 1798. They started a ferry service and a tavern there. However, the village grew slower than Carthage. Carthage was on the other side of the Black River. Both communities had access to water power from the river.

West Carthage officially became a village in 1889. The early village government faced challenges. It was difficult to get money for new projects and development.

Geography of West Carthage

West Carthage is in the eastern part of Jefferson County. Its exact location is 43°58′25″N 75°37′17″W / 43.973678°N 75.621355°W / 43.973678; -75.621355. The Black River forms the northeastern border of the village. Across the river is the village of Carthage. Carthage is in the town of Wilna.

The southeastern border of West Carthage is the line between Jefferson and Lewis County. The town of Denmark is next to the village on that side.

According to the United States Census Bureau, West Carthage covers a total area of about 3.6 square kilometers (1.4 square miles). Most of this area, about 3.36 square kilometers (1.31 square miles), is land. The remaining 0.25 square kilometers (0.10 square miles), or 6.96%, is water.

West Carthage is where two main roads meet. These are New York State Route 26 and New York State Route 126. Route 26 goes northwest for about 6 miles to Great Bend. It goes southeast for about 15 miles to Lowville. Route 126 goes west for 15 miles to Watertown. Watertown is the main city of Jefferson County.
