Denmark is a small town in Lewis County, New York, United States. It is named after the country Kingdom of Denmark in northern Europe. In 2020, about 2,626 people lived here. This was a bit less than the 2,860 people counted in 2010. The town is located on the northwestern edge of Lewis County. It is also east of the city of Watertown.

History of Denmark, New York

People first started settling in the area of Denmark around the year 1800. The town of Denmark was officially created in 1807. It was formed from a part of another town called Harrisburg.

Geography of Denmark

Denmark, New York, covers a total area of about 51 square miles (132 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 50.6 square miles (131 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.4 square miles (1.15 square kilometers), is water.

The northwestern border of the town is shared with Jefferson County. The Black River forms the eastern border of the town. Another important river is the Deer River. It flows through the northern part of the town. The Deer River eventually flows into the Black River.

Several main roads pass through Denmark. New York State Route 12 and New York State Route 26 both run through the town. They go from the northwest to the southeast, following along the Black River. New York State Route 410 also crosses the southeastern part of the town.
