Copenhagen is a small village in Lewis County, New York, United States. It is located between the larger towns of Watertown and Lowville. In 2020, about 631 people lived there. The village got its name from Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark. Copenhagen is part of the town of Denmark and is northwest of Lowville.
History of Copenhagen
Copenhagen was first known as "Mungers Mills." In 1807, the people living there decided to change the name to Copenhagen. They did this to show their support for the Danish capital, which was being attacked by the British Royal Navy at that time.
The village of Copenhagen officially became a village on February 22, 1896. In August 2019, the village celebrated its 150th anniversary with three days of fun events!
The Pinckney Corners Cemetery is a historic place in Copenhagen. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. This list includes important places in the United States that are worth protecting.
Geography of Copenhagen
Copenhagen is located in the western part of the town of Denmark. It covers an area of about 3.0 square kilometers (1.18 square miles), and all of it is land.
The Deer River flows through the village. This river is a branch of the larger Black River. At the eastern edge of the village, the Deer River flows over a beautiful spot called High Falls.
Copenhagen is on New York State Route 12, which is also known as Main Street. This road goes northwest about 14 miles (22 km) to Watertown. It also goes southeast about 12 miles (19 km) to Lowville, which is the main town for Lewis County.
