About the Great Chebeague Golf Club
Great Chebeague Island is an island in Casco Bay. It's near the town of Yarmouth. The Great Chebeague Golf Club is on the northern part of the island. A road called Stone Wharf Road goes through the golf course. This road leads to a dock where a ferry takes people to Cousins Island.
The Golf Course Layout
The golf course has nine holes. It was first designed in the 1920s. It still looks much like golf courses from that time. This means it has narrow fairways and small greens. Some parts of the course are north of Stone Wharf Road. The rest of the course and the clubhouse are to the south.
The Historic Clubhouse
The clubhouse is a very old building. It was built around 1807. It's a one-and-a-half-story wooden house. Originally, it was located near where the third golf hole is now. In 1928, the house was moved to its current spot. A porch was added around it in 1935.
Inside the clubhouse, you can still see many old features. These include wide floorboards and original fireplace mantels. People on the island say the house was built between 1790 and 1807. Next to the clubhouse, there's a small cemetery. It has headstones from the early 1800s.
History of Chebeague Island and Golf
Great Chebeague Island is the biggest island in Casco Bay. For many years, it was home to workers in Maine's granite industry. These workers helped transport stone from quarries. They sent the stone all along the East Coast of the United States.
From Granite to Resort
Later, steam-powered ships became popular. This made the granite shipping business slow down. So, the island changed. It became a popular place for people to visit for seaside vacations. Visitors came from cities further south.
Starting the Golf Club
The Great Chebeague Golf Club started in 1920. At first, it only had six holes. The club helped make golf popular in the area. It became an important part of the island's new life as a resort.
