Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Greater Hesse (which means Großhessen in German) was a special area in Germany right after World War II. It was set up by the American forces who were helping to rebuild Germany. This area later became the modern German state of Hesse.

What Was Hesse Before?

Before World War II, Germany was very different. After World War I, the old German Empire broke apart. A part of it, called the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt, became a new area known as the People's State of Hesse on 2 March 1919. This was one of the many changes Germany went through after the first big war.

How Greater Hesse Was Formed

After World War II ended, the American Military Government took charge of parts of Germany. On 19 September 1945, they decided to combine several areas to create Greater Hesse. They took most of the old Hesse-Darmstadt and added parts of two Prussian areas: Kurhessen and Nassau. This new combination helped to organize the region under American control.

From Greater Hesse to Modern Hesse

Greater Hesse was a temporary name. On 18 December 1946, this area was officially renamed simply Hesse. Just a few years later, in 1949, Hesse became one of the states that formed the new Federal Republic of Germany. This was an important step in rebuilding Germany into the country we know today.
