Green Lake is a beautiful lake located in Chisago City, Minnesota, United States. People sometimes call it "Big Green Lake." This is because it is connected to a smaller lake called Little Green Lake by a channel. The lake gets its name from its water, which often looks green due to a lot of tiny plants called algae.

Green Lake's Features

Green Lake is quite large, covering an area of 1,809 acres (732 ha). It is the biggest lake in the Chisago City area. At its deepest point, the lake is about 32 feet (9.8 m) deep. The water is usually clear enough to see about 9.6 feet (2.9 m) down.

The lake has a channel that connects it to Little Green Lake. If you want to put a boat in the water, the main public access is off County Road 23 in Chisago City. There is also a smaller access point on Little Green Lake, off Green Lake Avenue. You can use this one to get to Green Lake too.

Green Lake has three main parts. The northern part is called "Little Green." The middle section is the largest and main part of the lake. The southern end has many small bays and lots of plants growing in the water.

Around the Lake

The land around Green Lake is very developed. There are about 335 homes along its shoreline. You can also find one large regional park here called Camp Ojiketa.

Camp Ojiketa is a big park with 70 acres (28 ha) of trees and trails. It even has some cabins you can rent! This park is the newest and largest in Chisago City. Long ago, Camp Ojiketa was a camp for Camp Fire Girls. Today, it's a popular place to rent for events like weddings, family get-togethers, or other special occasions.

Fishing in Green Lake

Green Lake is a great spot for fishing! It's especially known for walleye, bluegill, and crappie. You can also find other common fish like lake sturgeon, largemouth bass, and northern pike.

Every year, Green Lake hosts a fun carp festival. People in the contest go out at night to catch as many carp as they can. The lake also holds a bass tournament. This event happens during Chisago City's yearly "Ki-Chi-Saga Days" festival.

In 2011, a study of the lake found many different kinds of fish. These included black bullhead, black crappie, bluegill, bowfin (also called dogfish), brown bullhead, common carp, golden shiner, green sunfish, hybrid sunfish, largemouth bass, northern pike, pumpkinseed, walleye, yellow bullhead, and yellow perch.

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) helps keep the walleye population healthy by adding young walleye to the lake every year. They also have rules about how big a walleye must be before you can keep it. This helps make sure there are always enough fish for everyone to enjoy!
