Green Mountain is a small, quiet community in Marshall County, Iowa, United States. It's a rural area, meaning it's mostly countryside. It is also known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. History of Green Mountain
Early Settlers and Naming
Some of the first people to settle near Green Mountain arrived in 1856. They came from Vermont and decided to name their new home after their old one. The main part of Green Mountain we know today was officially started in 1883. It was planned out by the Iowa Construction Company.
The town was built right next to the Chicago Great Western Railroad. This was important because trains helped people and goods travel easily.
Community Growth
Over time, Green Mountain grew. A church called the Green Mountain Congregational Church was built. It was one of the first churches in the county. The community also got a place to store grain, called a grain elevator, and a few other businesses. In 1907, a savings bank was built. By 1902, about 41 people lived in Green Mountain.
The Train Wreck of 1910
Green Mountain, Iowa, was the site of a very sad event known as the Green Mountain train wreck. This accident happened on March 21, 1910. It is known as the worst train wreck in Iowa's history. Sadly, 52 people lost their lives in this accident.

Geography of Green Mountain
Green Mountain is located in the northeastern part of Marshall County. It is about 7 miles (11 km) northeast of Marshalltown, which is the main city and county seat.
The area of Green Mountain is about 0.69 square miles (1.78 km²), and all of it is land. A small stream called Nickolson Creek flows through the western side of the community. This creek eventually joins Rock Creek, which then flows into the Iowa River east of Marshalltown.
