Greenmount is a small community located in Adams County, Pennsylvania, United States. It's found southwest of the famous Gettysburg Battlefield. The community sits along Marsh Creek and the Emmitsburg Road, which is also known as U.S. Route 15 Business. It is part of Cumberland Township.
Greenmount is surrounded by several other towns and communities. To the west, you'll find Fairfield. Gettysburg is to the north, and Round Top is to the northeast. To the east is Barlow, while Harney, Maryland is to the southeast, and Fairplay is to the south.

History of Greenmount
Greenmount has an interesting past, especially because of its location near the Battle of Gettysburg.
Bridges and the Battle of Gettysburg
The original stone bridge over Marsh Creek on Emmitsburg Road was built in 1814. Before the Battle of Gettysburg, this stone bridge was replaced with a covered bridge. Later, in 1921, a concrete bridge was built.
During the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, one division of the Union Army's XI Corps marched through the covered bridge. They used the muddy road next to it to reach the battlefield. Other army divisions took a different route. They crossed Marsh Creek further downstream, near a mill.
Another important bridge near Greenmount is the Cunningham Bridge. This bridge was built in 1894 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was closed around 1997.
Early 20th Century Events
Greenmount played a small part in a big event in 1919. It hosted the welcome ceremony for the 1919 Motor Transport Corps convoy from Pennsylvania. This was a very early cross-country trip by military vehicles. The convoy even cooked lunch at McCurdy's Schoolhouse, which was located north of Greenmount.
Marsh Creek Heights Park
In 1922, a wooden dam on Marsh Creek was taken down. A new concrete dam was built, and a park was created along the creek. This park was named "Marsh Creek Heights" in September 1922. It covered about 20 acres and included a baseball field. More cottages were later built on the ridges above the creek.
A new dam was constructed in 1926 and repaired in 1930. The Greenmount Fire Company was started at Marsh Creek Heights in 1934. In 1949, a new baseball field with a grandstand was built at the park.
