History of Fairfield
Fairfield and the Civil War
During the American Civil War, a battle took place near Fairfield. This was part of the larger Gettysburg Campaign. The fight was between soldiers from the 6th United States Cavalry and a group of Virginia Cavalry.
This battle was important because it helped Robert E. Lee's army retreat safely. After the main battle at Gettysburg, his soldiers needed a way to get back to the Potomac River. The fight at Fairfield helped secure a path for them.
After the battle, injured Union soldiers were cared for in Fairfield. They were treated in homes and even in St. John's Lutheran Church.
Historic Places in Town
Fairfield has some very old and important places. The Fairfield Historic District and the Fairfield Inn are special. They are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are protected because of their history.
