History of the Fairfield Inn

Early Days of the Inn

The land where the Fairfield Inn stands was once part of a much larger area. This land was given to John Miller in 1755. Records show that the oldest part of the Fairfield Inn was built around the late 1760s. This means the inn has been standing for over 250 years!

The Inn During the Civil War

During the American Civil War, the inn was run by a person named Peter Shively. In 1863, after the famous Battle of Gettysburg, soldiers from the Confederate Army caused damage to his property. Peter Shively later asked for money to cover his losses. These losses included things like food, animal feed, and other supplies. The total value of the damages was $278.

Recognizing the Inn's Importance

The Fairfield Inn is a very special place. On April 2, 1973, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important historical sites in the United States. The inn is also part of the Fairfield Historic District. This means it is in an area with many other old and important buildings.

In 2007, the Governor of Pennsylvania, Ed Rendell, visited the inn. He gave the owners, the Chandon family, a special award. This award celebrated the inn being in business for 250 years in a row. It showed how important the Fairfield Inn has been to the history of the area.
