Greenwood Springs gets its name from a special mineral spring nearby. A mineral spring is a natural place where water comes out of the ground, and it has minerals dissolved in it. People used to believe this water had healing powers.
The spring itself was named after Thomas Greenwood. He moved to this area from Alabama in 1821. Because of the spring, several hotels were built in the area. Visitors would stay there to try the water, hoping it would make them feel better.
