The Grenadier is a special type of apple that comes from England. It's mostly used for cooking, not usually for eating fresh. This apple first appeared in the mid-1800s in a place called Buckinghamshire. It was officially noted in 1862 in Maidstone, Kent. A person named Charles Turner showed it off, and later, a company called Bunyard Nursery started selling it.

All About the Grenadier Apple

A Bit of History

The Grenadier apple has a cool history. It's known for being easy to grow. It also produces lots of apples each year. This apple can handle wet weather. It's also strong against common apple diseases and frost that might hurt its flowers.

In 1883, the Royal Horticultural Society gave it a "First Class Certificate." This was a big award! Later, in 1993, it received the Award of Garden Merit from the same society. This award means it's a great plant for gardeners to grow.

What Does It Look Like?

The Grenadier apple has smooth, light green skin. When it's ready to be picked, its skin turns a yellowish-green color. The apple often has bumps or wide ribs on its surface. It usually doesn't have any rough, brown patches called russet.

Inside, the apple's flesh is off-white. Sometimes it has a slight green tint. It tastes quite sharp and tangy.

How Is It Used?

The Grenadier apple is perfect for cooking. When you cook it, the flesh melts down. It turns into a nice yellowish puree. This puree is great for making apple jam or apple sauce. However, it's not the best choice for making apple pies.

This apple ripens in the early part of the apple season. In the United Kingdom, this is usually around mid-August. Once picked, it stays fresh for about one week.

Growing Grenadier Apples

The Grenadier apple tree is considered "self-sterile." This means it needs pollen from another type of apple tree to produce fruit. Luckily, it's a very good pollinator itself. This means it helps other apple trees produce their fruit too!
