Grete Frische (born June 15, 1911 – died August 17, 1962) was a talented Danish actress, writer, and director. She was the daughter of a playwright. Grete Frische is most famous for the movies she wrote. Her war drama The Viking Watch of the Danish Seaman won a special award in 1949 called the Bodil Award for Best Danish Film.

Even though her career was less than 24 years long, Grete wrote 22 movie scripts. This included five of the very popular Far til Fire (which means Father of Four) family comedies. She also adapted two books by Morten Korch into movies.

Early Life and Adventures

Grete Frische was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her father, Axel Frische, was an actor and playwright. He wanted Grete to study English and History instead of going to acting school. So, she went to Bedford, England, to study.

While in England, Grete met a young student from Burma. They got married, and she moved far away to Mandalay and Rangoon in Burma. Before World War II started, she returned home to Denmark.

A Creative Career Begins

After coming back to Denmark in 1938, Grete Frische started her acting career on stage. She performed in plays at different theaters in Copenhagen. Her acting skills were clear to everyone.

Grete also studied to become a writer and director for films. She worked as an assistant director for famous people like Benjamin Christensen. In 1943, she joined Saga Studio as a writer and film director.

Grete wrote many stories, including short stories and radio plays. She also wrote a book called The Road to Mandalay. But her best work was seen in her movie scripts.

Writing for the Big Screen

From 1945, Grete Frische worked as a freelance screenwriter. This meant she wrote scripts for different film companies. She wrote five of the beloved Far til fire (Father of Four) family comedies for ASA Film. These movies were very popular with families.

She also turned two novels by Morten Korch into movies. In 1948, Grete wrote a true story about the war called The Viking Watch of the Danish Seaman. She based this film on a diary kept by Kaj Frische during the war. The movie was highly praised and won the 1949 Bodil Award for Best Danish Film.

Directing and Performing

In the 1940s, Grete Frische also directed some of her own stories. These included Detective Bloch and A New Day Dawns. She also directed We Meet at Tove's.

Besides writing and directing, Grete also acted in movies. She even performed in live cabaret shows. In the 1940s, she became famous for a funny character she played on a weekly radio show called Snøvle-Sofie. This character was a bit whiny but also tough. Grete often brought this character into her films, like the grumpy housemaid she played in We Meet at Tove's.

Later Years and Legacy

In 1959, Grete Frische was supposed to act in a movie called Adventure on Mallorca. However, she became ill shortly after arriving and had to return home.

Grete Frische passed away at the age of 51. In her career, which lasted less than 24 years, she wrote 22 screenplays, acted in 10 movies, and directed 4 films. Her work left a lasting mark on Danish cinema.
