The Dillwynia cinerascens, also known as the grey parrot-pea, is a special plant from the pea family, Fabaceae. It grows naturally in Australia. This plant is known for its pretty pea-like flowers.

What the Grey Parrot-Pea Looks Like

This plant is a type of shrub. It can grow either flat on the ground (called decumbent) or stand upright (called erect). It usually reaches a height of 0.3 to 1.5 meters. Its stems have tiny hairs that lie flat against them.

Leaves and Flowers

The leaves of the grey parrot-pea are long and thin, like a line. They are about 5 to 20 millimeters long and very narrow, only 0.3 to 0.5 millimeters wide. In springtime, the plant produces its "pea" flowers. These flowers grow in small bunches at the ends of the branches. After the flowers, small pods appear. These pods are about 5 millimeters long and hold smooth seeds inside.

How the Grey Parrot-Pea Got Its Name

The grey parrot-pea was first officially described by a botanist named Robert Brown. He wrote about it in a science magazine called the Botanical Magazine in 1821. Robert Brown found this plant in 1804. He discovered it growing near the River Derwent in Tasmania.

Where the Grey Parrot-Pea Grows

You can find Dillwynia cinerascens in several parts of Australia. It grows in dry forests and woodlands. These areas include New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia.
